Pandemic Boilie Range – Mad Baits

In 2014 I was really starting to get into my Barbel fishing and after a couple of successful June trips I got a call from my old pal Mark Leonard, the owner of Mad Baits, asking me to pop down the factory for a chat. He was developing a new boilie range for Barbel and invited me to be part of the testing team. I was doing well with what I was using at the time so was a little unsure but he said “trust me” and gave me a bag of bait that at the time we christened River Spice.

That is where a great relationship started and I became part of the Mad team and despite offers from other companies I remain committed to this day.

The first trip with the bait was enough to convince me to go with it, fishing one rod on River Spice and the other on my favourite at the time, the new bait caught all the fish. The same happened on the next session so from then on I only used the new bait and set a target of a double figure Barbel for every month of the season.

The concern we had at the time was would it be a good bait in the winter, well I achieved my target catching lots of back up fish all through the year, it was great fishing and apart from two lads fishing the Nene I had it exclusively for the first year.

The Carp lads on the Mad team got wind of the bait and wanted to try it, Mark gave some to a few of them and their catch rates improved dramatically as well as picking up bonus Bream and Tench, it was a this point we renamed the bait Pandemic, because it catches everything……

We didn’t release the bait for three years as we worked on tweaks to make it the special bait it is today. For me it was a tremendous time I caught so many Barbel on a number or rivers to 16-09 and during the close seasons I took a number of big Carp to 41-10 with bonus Tench to 9 plus.

I’d been giving samples to friends and people I met on the bank all who had positive results and were desperate to get their hands on more. When Mark finally released it for general sale it quickly became one of our most popular baits and remains so to this day.

The team at Mad HQ blend their Krill with two high quality fishmeals, a pure high quality liver powder and a range of bird foods before adding their own range of spices that include the excellent fenugreek (for me the killer ingredient), garlic, chilli, paprika and a few other in-house secrets that give the bait a serious kick that Carp and Barbel love.

It’s come a long way since we first started with Dumbells, Wafters, Hard Hookers, Stick Mixes, Food dips, Glugs and Sprays now available. There are baits down the years from other suppliers that stand out but Pandemic is right up there and as successful as all of them.

For me and many of my friends Pandemic has been and remains and excellent all year round bait choice for Barbel, Chub and Carp, I still use them today and have had tremendous success with 300 plus doubles over the last 7 seasons, I highly recommend them.
