Welcome to my Angling website – Julian Barnes Angling

I’m still as passionate about our sport as the first day I wet a line and want to share my experiences through my monthly blog. I will write honestly about the highs, lows, laughs and tactics employed that have caught me some wonderful fish down the years.

My first memory of fishing was at four years old, my uncle taking me to the local brook where we used to catch Chub, Trout and lose unseen Carp, the seeds were sown and I was hooked for life.

As I got older fishing the River Ouse around St Neots I graduated into the match scene winning my share and made the Nationals team for St Neots Angling Club at 11 years old. I fished junior matches until I won the Club Junior Championship at 14 years old and moved onto senior matches giving them a run for their money until I made a discovery…… Wels Catfish.

I caught my first one at Woburn Abbey in 1981 and loved the mystery as so little was known about them. I got into Carp and Pike fishing but always thought about Cats, my friends and I discovered Claydon in 1989, we caught loads and wanted bigger.

In 1991 I made my first of many trips to France for Cats before moving onto Spain in 2001 and I continued to have numerous trips abroad every year since with English fishing taking a back seat to bringing up my daughter, two jobs and bodybuilding. I have fished in Scotland, France, Spain, Cuba, Goa and Thailand catching some wonderful fish that I could only dream about years ago, including many Cats over 100 pound too 206.

My life commitments have changed down the years and from 2013 I got right back into my English fishing mainly targeting Barbel, while still getting some brilliant fishing abroad every year and I’m loving every minute of it.

I enjoy writing and sharing my experiences and have been a regular contributor to Catch Cult. I’ve been very fortunate and am proudly supported and sponsored by Madbaits, Free Spirit, Jack Pyke and Castaway PVA, click on the links above which will take you to their websites.
